Astral Drop

Astral Drops are a fictional power in the W.I.T.C.H. series of comic books and animated television shows. Astral Drops are solid psychic copies of each of the Guardian characters from the series; they possesses some of their knowledge, and are most often used so that the absence of W.I.T.C.H. is not noticed by their parents and teachers when they go on missions.

In the animated series

In the animated television series, Astral Drops are created by the Heart of Kandrakar pendant. When any of the five members of W.I.T.C.H. hold the Heart of Kandrikar and say the words "spord lartsa" ("Astral Drops" backwards), a duplicate of that member will appear. Unlike the member they are created from, the Astral Drop duplicates are unintelligent, emotionless, powerless, and have none of a member's memories. The duplicates disappear at the member's will, or when a member says "Astral Drop".

One episode of the series, "H is for Hunted", focused on the concept of character's Astral Drops, mainly Will Vandom's. Will creates an Astral Drop to do her chores for her, but an evil sorceress Nerissa changes the Drop into an Altermere; this gives the Astral Drop Will's feelings, emotions, and a soul of its own. The Altermere lives Will's life in her place for a short time, and grows attached to it. Still thinking that it is an emotionless Astral Drop, Will hunts the Altermere down so it can be reabsorbed into the Heart pendant that created it. Will and the other guardians corner the Altermere at their school's football field. Will insults the Altermere by telling her she has no emotions, and doesn't feel anything. This makes her cry. The Altermere attacks Will for fear of being destroyed. After the Altermere is subdued by the guardians, Will realizes that it is alive, and released her. The Altermere forgives Will; they share a touching moment, but this interrupted by the sorceress Nerissa firing a lightning blast at them. Will's Altermere shields the blast to defend Will, fatally injuring her. She begins to disappear, and Will is forced to absorb her Altermere into herself so that her memories, emotions and feelings can live on.

In the Comics

In the comic book series, Astral Drops are created by the girls. When the Astral Drops have served their purpose, the girls merge with them. The Astral Drops don't disappear after merging; they are moved to a dark void. During the latter part of the third arc of the W.I.T.C.H. comic books, the Astral Drops rebel against the girls, and are forced to free them from the void to have their own lives.
